Mathematics:Numbers (30-50 Months)

The children were provided with an interactive number board with occupational vehicles, children matched the numeral to the quantity of vehicles. 

What adults can do

•Use number language, e.g. ‘one’, ‘two’, ‘three’, ‘lots’, ‘fewer’, ‘hundreds’, ‘how many?’ and ‘count’ in a variety of situations. 

•Support children’s developing understanding of abstraction by counting things that are not objects, such as hops, jumps, clicks or claps. 

•Model counting of objects in a random layout, showing the result is always the same as long as each object is only counted once. 

•Model and encourage use of mathematical language e.g. asking questions such as ‘How many saucepans will fit on the shelf?’ 

•Help children to understand that one thing can be shared by number of pieces, e.g. a pizza. 

•As you read number stories or rhymes, ask e.g. ‘When one more frog jumps in, how many will there be in the pool altogether?’ 

•Use pictures and objects to illustrate counting songs, rhymes and number stories. 

•Encourage children to use mark-making to support their thinking about numbers and simple problems. 

•Talk with children about the strategies they are using, e.g. to work out a solution to a simple problem by using fingers or counting aloud.

-Holds a conversation, jumping from topic to topic (22-36 Months) 

The children explored an egg during talking tables. Some of the comments made by the children were: “im drawing a lion” “I’m drawing a mouse” “ a dinosaur” “I’m drawing me and you"
 When the egg cracked the children spoke about their personal experiences with eggs. “eggs and butter, toast and a brew” "Chocolate" “I have egg at Courtney’s” “egg, I have egg at home"

Exploring and using media and materials

• Explores and experiments with a range of media using sensory exploration, and using whole body (8-20 months)

The Discoverer's explored colour and light using glow sticks in the dark this week.

Builders Site

The staff provided design paper on clipboards with pens and encouraged children to design their own buildings encouraging children to give meaning to marks as they draw (Literacy: Writing. 30-50 Months). 

when the designs were complete the children were encouraged to build their building following their paper designs allowing the children to show interest in shape and space by playing with shapes or making arrangements with objects. (Mathematics: Shape, Space and Measures. 30-50 Months)

"I'm making so many windows and a light and a sofa, it a house"

"This is my house, this is my oven, this is my back garden and another oven and a little bedroom and a big bedroom. I'm going to build it now"

"This is a kitchen and this is a house. I've done a garden and a kitchen and a living room, my house is teeny"
